This course utilizes a critical approach to the analysis of the cultures
and histories of Native peoples of North America. It is designed to
encourage questioning of conventional assumptions and depictions of
Native peoples, whether the sources of such information are
anthropological and historical writings, popular films, news reports,
museums, or other sources disseminated by non-Native people. Students
explore social, cultural and political issues that have been, and
continue to be, central to the lives of the Native peoples of North
America, and will attempt to understand Native peoples'
own perspectives on these issues.
