Regardless of your major area of study, you are a developing human
being. Gaining insight into the general patterns of human development
will help you to understand your own unique life cycle.
To this end, this course explores the biological, psychological and
social events that shape the meaning of life at three critical stages:
young adulthood, middle age and old age. Erikson's lifespan model of
human development forms the framework for this course, but it also
examines the work of other noted contributors to this field, e.g.
Levinson on male development and Gilligan on female development.
In keeping with an interdisciplinary focus, current events, ethical
dilemmas and multicultural perspectives are woven into class
discussions. Using texts, other assigned readings, instructor and guest
lectures, experimental exercises (i.e. sharing circles, self-assessment
instruments), videos, presentations by classmates, and class discussion,
personal experiences and practical applications in light of the
foundational human development theories are considered.
