The Mathematics Department offers undergraduate majors leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics. The BA in mathematics combines a fundamental core of required mathematics courses with the flexibility to choose from a wide range of electives. The BS degree is designed to give students an appreciation of the applications of mathematics to the sciences.
Our newest degree is a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics with certification in secondary education for those wishing to pursue a career as a high school mathematics teacher.
The department's faculty members are in the forefront of current work in both research and the teaching of mathematics. Classes are small and supportive, and you are encouraged to discuss class assignments and problems during frequent office hours.
You'll find technology used extensively throughout the mathematics curriculum. For example, all of our calculus students use graphing calculators. If you need additional help with any of your courses, you can tap the expertise of the faculty and the best department majors who staff our Mathematics Tutoring Lab. This lab, open more than 50 hours a week, serves as a resource for first-year students and sophomores, and provides a valuable experience for junior and senior tutors. While completing a challenging curriculum in mathematics, you have the opportunity to work in local corporations as part of our cooperative education (Co-Op) program. Students who qualify for the program can gain academic credit and earn high wages for this valuable experience.
