Since receiving his Ph.D at the University of Massachusetts, Stephen Markson has been at the University of Hartford. He earned tenure and promotion in the 1980s, served as Chair of the Department of Sociology, and was a research associate and co-principal investigator for the Center for Social Research at the University of Hartford.

His scholarship spans a number of research interests. With considerable training and expertise in qualitative methods and ethnography, he has published journal articles, book chapters, and research reports on such topics as anti abortion activism, censorship campaigns, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of social policies and programs in the State of Connecticut.
