Maggy Tomkins
Fulbright Scholar Guides University in Fight Against AIDS
Massie Tomkins, an internationally renowned AIDS educator from Sydney, Australia, arrived at the University of Hartford in the fall semester as a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence for the 1999–2000 academic year. An AIDS expert, Tomkins is well known for her groundbreaking efforts in AIDS education in Australia, Japan, Indonesia, China and Fiji. She has worked directly with people with AIDS and has been instrumental in helping to develop international strategies in HIV education.

Nurses at the Atheneum
Nursing and Art
Two faculty members in the Division of Nursing are making good use of the University's corporate membership in the Wadsworth Atheneum. Eleanor Chester, assistant professor, and Karen Lucas Breda, associate professor, are taking registered nurses in the RN-to-BSN program to the Atheneum as part of a nursing course focusing on families and culture.

Fall Commencement: Mysteries and Miracles
The 95 graduates at the annual Fall Commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 5, were the last class "to graduate from the University of Hartford in what is commonly known as the 20th century," said President Walter Harrison."You will lead your lives and pursue your careers in the 21st century," said Harrison. "So today is a milestone for the University, as well as one for you personally."

When Elizabeth S. Ivey joined the University of Hartford as provost in 1995, she walked head-on into one of the most difficult and challenging periods in the institution's history. Now, as she prepares for her June 30 retirement, Ivey sees a University that is far different from the one she first encountered five years ago.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters
The University of Hartford's Center for Community Service (CCS), in cooperation with Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, has initiated a campus-based program for a group of third graders from the Metacomet Elementary School in Bloomfield, Conn. The youngsters come to campus once a week to take part in activities with their University mentors.
