Alumna Joins Hartt Faculty Pamela Devenport, who graduated summa cum laude from The Hartt School and who holds three degrees ('82, '83, '87) from the University, has been named chair of the Hartt Community Division departments of strings and chamber music. She has also joined the faculty of The Hartt School teaching cello and is the head of the Suzuki Pedagogy program in cello. While at Hartt she was a student of David Wells and David Finckel (Emerson Quartet) and a winner of the Hartt Concerto Competition.
The premise of the Suzuki method is that learning is the product of environment, and any skill can be learned when broken into small, easily mastered steps. The method starts students between the ages of 4 and 6 and actively involves the parents in the instructional process. Additionally, Suzuki students are immediately involved in group activities. Pamela was a member of the Florida West Coast Symphony, maintained a private studio of cello students in the Sarasota area, and conducted the Florida West Coast Youth Symphony. A two-term trustee of the Yellow Barn Music Festival, she was assistant director of the festival for three years and a chamber music participant for 10 summers.
