March 15, 2006

Michael Parenti, an internationally known award-winning author and lecturer and one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts, will speak on “Democracy vs. Empire” as part of the University of Hartford’s Spring 2006 Humanities Center Lecture Series. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in the university’s Gengras Student Union building, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford.

Parenti, who has won awards from Project Censored, the Caucus for a New Political Science, New Jersey Peace Action, and the city of Santa Cruz, is the author of 19 books, including his most recent, The Culture Struggle (Seven Stories Press, 2006). Parenti is also the author of Superpariotism (City Lights Books, 2004), The Terrorism Trap (City Lights Books, 2002), To Kill a Nation (Verso Books, 2001), and America Besieged (City Lights Books, 1998).

“Here at home and throughout the world people are fighting back against the forces of wealth, privilege, and militarism — some because they have no choice, others because they would choose no other course but the one that leads to peace and justice,” notes Parenti.

He serves on the board of judges for Project Censored, and on the advisory boards of Independent Progressive Politics Network, Education Without Borders, and the Jasenovic Foundation; as well as the advisory editorial boards of New Political Science and Nature, Society and Thought.

“A prolific author, a charismatic speaker, and a regular guest on radio and television talk shows, Parenti communicates his message in an accessible, provocative, and historically informed style that is unrivaled among fellow progressive activists and thinkers,” noted Aurora Online in January 2004.

This talk is part of the University of Hartford’s Humanities Center lecture series on “Freedom of Expression in America: Origins, Development and Challenges.”
