About the Ombudsman
The ombudsman is a specially trained, neutral person designated to help students, alumni, faculty, staff, and visitors handle problems. He is a skilled conflict resolution professional, and is available to all members of the University of Hartford community. He will not intervene, however, in any matters covered under a collective-bargaining agreement or any matter that is currently part of the University's formal grievance process.

The Office Of The Ombudsman Is

  • is not an office that places the University on notice
Neutral*
  • does not advocate for any party
  • does not advocate for the institution
  • advocates for fairness and equity
Informal*
  • does not participate in any formal process
  • does not make decisions or policy
Independent*
  • does not represent the University
  • advises and makes recommendations on University policies and processes
*Confidentiality, neutrality, informality, and independence are the essential characteristics of the ombudsman's office.

Communication with the ombudsman are considered privileged and confidential. The privilege belongs to the ombudsman. The only exception to confidentiality is when there is an imminent risk of serious harm.
