Awards Bestowed on Members of Arts and Sciences

At commencement, there are a series of honors and awards bestowed on various members of the University of Hartford community. This year, we are proud to announce that 8 members of the College of Arts and Sciences were honored with awards: three students, two alumni, and three faculty members.

Student Awards

Kyle Hebert '14

John G. Lee Medal

This medal is awarded annually to an exemplary graduating senior based on the following three criteria: academic excellence (based mainly on cumulative grade point average), community service, and a permanent (home) address in one of 30 designated towns in the Greater Hartford Area. Community service can be to the University of Hartford Community, Greater Hartford Community, town, or organization.

Catherine Brennan '14

John G. Martin Scholarship

This Scholarship provides an extraordinary opportunity for a student to study for two years at Oxford’s Hertford College. This scholarship is very prestigious and extremely competitive. The list of applicants is abridged to three by a university committee, and those three finalists' applications are sent to Oxford for the final selection.

Nicole M. Kalmus '14

Belle K. Ribicoff Prize

This prize is awarded annually to an exemplary graduating senior who has completed his or her junior year at the University of Hartford. Academic excellence is the primary criterion for this award. In addition to an outstanding formal academic record, the candidate should demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and familiarity with the major concepts and ideas that have shaped our culture and civilization. The prize will also recognizes intellectual curiosity, originality of thought, and a commitment to extracurricular activities, including service to the university and/or to the larger community.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to a University graduate who has made an exceptional impact on his/her profession, community, and the University.

Faculty Awards

Nels P Highberg, PhD

Donald D. Davis All-University Curriculum Award

This award honors a faculty member who is an effective interdisciplinary teacher and scholar; has contributed to the AUC program as a whole, for example, through course development; and is an advocate for interdisciplinary education.

Monica J Hardesty, PhD

Roy E. Larsen Award for Excellence in Teaching

This award is made possible through the generosity of the Larsen family in honor of Dr. Roy E. Larsen. It is given each year to one or more faculty members, for excellence in teaching and contributions to University life. It is the Larsen family’s wish that the gift serve to promote the higher quality of academic instruction that was so important to Dr. Roy E. Larsen.

Jessica Nicklin, PhD

Belle K. Ribicoff Junior Faculty Prize

Established through a generous gift from Belle K. Ribicoff, a longtime supporter and life regent of the University, this prize recognizes an outstanding junior faculty member, a professor who is in a tenure-track position but is not yet tenured, who demonstrates combined excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and service.
