Whether your current goal is a career in chemistry, biochemistry, a medical profession, environmental law, forensics, a food science, chemical physics, or any other related discipline, the Department offers major programs designed to furnish a thorough foundation in the various areas of chemistry leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science as described in the General Information section. The Department of Chemistry is included on the list of departments approved by the American Chemical Society. The Bachelor of Science program in chemistry is designed to meet the standards set by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society, and students who complete that B.S. program will be certified to the A.C.S. upon graduation. A B.S. Joint Major in Chemistry and Biology is offered as an ideal program for students interested in medical, dental or veterinary schools or in graduate study in biology or biochemistry interdisciplinary programs.
One of the important opportunities for Chemistry and Chemistry-Biology students is to participate in an active research program with a faculty mentor. Some students begin as early as the freshman year, depending on the student's laboratory background. The faculty interests encompass many areas in the forefront of chemistry, so students have a wide range of options for projects. A number of students have been co-authors on publications in top peer-reviewed national research journals as a result of their undergraduate research experiences, as well as having opportunities to present their findings at regional and national professional meetings.
