Nels P. Highberg holds a BA in English (Concentration: Creative Writing) from the University of Houston, an MA in Women's Studies and an MA in Comparative Cultural Studies (Concentration: Science and Technology Studies) from the Ohio State University, and a PhD in Language, Literacy, and Rhetoric from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has co-edited Landmark Essays in Basic Writing and Writing Groups Inside and Outside the Classroom. His scholarly essays have appeared in journals such as Feminist Formations, Medical Humanities Review, Feminist Teacher, and Performing Ethos, while his creative essays have appeared in Concho River Review and Riding Light Review. Since arriving at the University of Hartford in 2003, he has served as chair of the Department of Rhetoric and Professional Writing, interim chair of the Department of Cinema, and Director of the Program in Gender Studies. The university has awarded Dr. Highberg with an Innovations in Teaching and Learning Award, the Donald W. Davis All-University Curriculum Award, and the Greenberg Award for Junior Faculty Research. He has also been a Semester Scholar-in-Residence at New York University. He teaches courses in general-education writing, first-year seminars, and the All-University Curriculum.
