Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with Certification in Secondary Education

You love math and want to teach. At the University of Hartford, you’ll study mathematics education in a department with a calculus program that ranks in the top 1% in the country with professors known for their innovative teaching. Many of our courses are in “flipped” classrooms, so you’ll spend class time analyzing and solving problems with your professor and classmates, rather than taking notes in a large lecture hall. We know that you learn mathematics by doing mathematics.

Our teacher education classes are also different. You will earn your teaching certification in our College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, which is noted for its experiential learning style.

The UHart campus hosts a public magnet high school, University High School of Science and Engineering, where you will spend time learning about working with students and teachers. Get involved with our Math Club and work on advanced problem-solving with faculty and classmates. Do research side-by-side with a mathematics professor, who will know you personally thanks to our small class sizes. Co-author research publications and make presentations at regional and national conferences. After four years of in-classroom experience, plus many opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom, your path to success will be clear.

You will be eligible for certification to teach secondary math, but you are also graduating with a mathematics degree. Our students have a 100% pass rate on the Praxis II, the test that measures your knowledge of the subject you will teach—in this case, math.
