Career Readiness

In 2016, the National Association of Colleges and Employers conducted a survey of employers and asked them to identify the skills they look for in the people they hire.

Employers named these four skills as essential:

  • critical thinking and problem solving;
  • professionalism and work ethic;
  • teamwork; and
  • oral and written communication

These are exactly the skills that a liberal arts education fosters. In fact, these skills are not specific to a particular major. They are found in all of the majors the College of Arts and Sciences offers and the major will be instrumental in developing and enhancing these skills. In addition, these skills are transferable, preparing students for their first job, as well as all of the jobs they will hold throughout their careers, even the ones that don’t exist yet.
