Alumni Play in Negro League Baseball Special
Two University of Hartford alumni helped celebrate the rich heritage of Negro League Baseball by playing in the "ESPN Classic Vintage Live: Negro League Baseball" game on Sunday, Feb. 26. The game was part of the cable channel's Black History Month programming.

University alumni Brian Pinney ‘99, and Brandon Handfield ‘00, played for the Bristol Barnstormers, representing the barnstorming teams of the 1940s. The Bristol Barnstormers played the Birmingham Black Barons, representing the famous Negro League team of the same name.

Both teams’ amateur rosters featured former collegiate and minor league players who competed using equipment and wearing uniforms that replicate the late-1940s period in baseball. Both Pinney and Handfield played varsity baseball for the Hawks while enrolled at the University of Hartford. Pinney played from 1996-99 and Handfield played from 1997-2000.

The vintage game was played at the historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., and celebrated the rich heritage and tradition of the Negro Leagues and their role in the history of baseball and in the African-American community.

For more information about the game, visit http://media.espn.com/MediaZone/PressKits/vintage_baseball.htm
