AUCC 110 -- Hunger: Problems of Scarcity and Choice

All people can be divided into two cultures, the hungry minority and the non-hungry majority. Between the two is a chasm of incomprehension. This course is an attempt to bridge that chasm. Why are people hungry? Is there not enough food to go around, or are some people consuming more than their share? What is the fair share? Who decides? How and why do people consume more than their share? Why don't the poor work harder to earn more food? Why don't they have fewer children? Why aren't they more like us? Why don't we teach the poor to be more like us?

How does poverty in American compare to poverty in Asia, Africa, and Latin America? What do all poor people have in common? What do all rich people have in common? Why don't the rich care for the poor?

How does politics and public schooling influence the distribution of wealth in America? What does it mean to be an American? What do you believe? What are your principles? Do you pledge allegience to liberty and justice for all? Are all created equal? Are some born rich and others poor? How can they all be equal? What will you do about the inequalities, the savage inequalities? What do you really want?
