How can some societies condone polygamy? Why don't the Chinese drink much milk? In some
societies, men wear skirts; how do they feel about that? Is one culture superior to another?
When cultural changes occur, how do people react to them? Questions like these are addressed
in AUCC 120.
Each semester the course considers four cultures from among these: China, Japan, Poland,
Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, India/Pakistan, South Africa and Mexico. You will learn
something of the history, geography, customs and rituals of each country.
For each culture you will read a selection of fiction, poetry, plays and essays. All are
written by authors from the culture itself and with few exceptions they are the work of
contemporary, living writers. You will also see and discuss two films made by directors
native to each country.
