The ultimate goal of this course is to educate ourselves for life in a complex international
order. The course surveys both the range of materials (print and electronic) and the disciplines
(e.g., history, language studies, political science, communication) upon which a citizen
must draw to reach informed decisions about an ever-changing world.
Students discovering the news through AUCS 210 will be looking at daily newspapers,
watching TV news or listening to the radio every evening, and reading a weekly news magazine
each week through the semester. Students sample a number of different daily papers and weeklies
and at least a dozen different types of news broadcasts, representing the full range of news
formats and shades of opinion (right, left and center) available in the U.S.
