AUCS 340 -- Ethics in the Professions

Ethics in the Professions is a course based largely on student case study presentations. Teams of three to five students are grouped early in the semester, and assigned ethical situation case studies about two weeks before they are to be orally presented to the rest of the class. Normally two oral presentations are required of each student during the course of the semester. Conclusions are influenced by tenets of ethical theory presented early in the semester. In addition, a term paper which demonstrates practices in proper research and presentation of theses is required on an ethics topic of the student's own choosing.

Topics covered in the course include several of the following topics: euthanasia, physician assisted dying, abortion, animal rights, homelessness, police ethics, AIDS, journalism ethics, engineering ethics (safety), business ethics, truth in advertising, and more.

Professors from various disciplines (philosophy, engineering, business, and other applied ethics disciplines) teach the course on a regular basis.
