This AUC course focuses on how a combination of forces transformed
America -- a nation of farmers at the time of the Civil War -- into a
mighty industrial nation with a middle class culture. We'll examine how
capitalism, technology, and immigration changed society, how women and
blacks sought and sometimes gained their civil rights, how the far
western frontier was won and for whom, and how America became a nation of
consumers. In other words, how the America we know now was formed by
the time a second World War loomed on the horizon in the late 1930s.
You'll be encouraged to understand how ideas, institutions, and social
groups competed with one another to influence the formation of a dominant
culture.
