Summer Business Institute

July 30 - August 11, 2017

Description of the program

Join other top high school students on the University of Hartford campus this summer for an experience that will set you apart from the rest. Live in a college dorm with a roommate, experience life on campus, and take a 3 credit college-level course.

Overview

As young, pre-college students (rising high school juniors, seniors, and incoming Barney School freshmen) enrolled in this course you will be introduced to the economic, marketing, financial accounting, ethical and societal dimensions of business. Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills are developed through participation in an interactive team based simulation. The specific modules of the simulation will be preceded and/or followed by analysis and discussion facilitated by our own professional faculty who bring their deep professional expertise to help you understand the intricacies of business success.

As students of this Barney School of Business Summer Business Institute you will also gain general exposure to the academic, residential and social support systems available at the Barney School and the University of Hartford. After this two week program you will be well-prepared to undertake your college search.

Earn College Credit While Still in High School

This is a fabulous opportunity to begin accumulating college credit while still a high school student. You will complete our MGT 101: Business Exploration – 3 credit course.  If your college plans bring you to the University of Hartford and/or specifically the Barney School of Business your college credit is guaranteed to matriculate as an unrestricted elective on your transcript.  Should you choose to attend another college or university, successfully completing MGT 101 would matriculate as college credit upon review and approval of the college you attend.

The College Experience

During this two week Summer Business Institute you will stay in one of our residential facilities and experience what college is really like. You will live in the residence hall with an assigned roommate. The Barney School student proctors mentoring you in the academic program will be residential advisors in the dorm as well. While there will be homework to complete in the evening hours there are also planned activities for social relaxation and building lifelong friendships.

*Students will return home on the weekend in between the two weeks of the program.
