About the Department
The Civil Engineering program has been accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) since 1978. Civil Engineers are required to take core courses in engineering, math and sciences, as well as in the humanities, which help students become well-rounded individuals. The remainder of credits are focused upon Structures, Transportation, Materials, Surveying, Water Resources, Environmental, and Geotechnical Engineering.
A senior design project is required of all civil engineering students. Civil Engineering students with the Environmental concentration focus their elective courses on various environmental engineering topics, such as Water Resources, Water Quality, Air Pollution Control, and Solid Waste Management. While in school, students have the opportunity to work cooperatively with local industry providing them with real world experiences.
Our graduates work for the nationally recognized companies and local, state, and federal government agencies involved with building and maintaining the nation's infrastructure.
Civil Engineering Design Center for Cities and Towns
The Civil Engineering Design Center for Cities and Towns is the conduit through which cities and towns submit projects to the University to be executed by undergraduate Civil Engineering students. Projects cover all areas of Civil Engineering: structural, environmental, transportation and geotechnical. The work, done under the supervision of professional mentors, starts students on their career path of promoting the public good, while at the same time giving the cities and towns the benefit of meeting the needs of their communities.

Mission
The mission of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Hartford is to provide high quality professional engineering education, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, continually updated and consistent with trends active within the engineering profession, to full- and part-time students, and to provide continuing educational opportunities to engineering professionals. This education is directed primarily towards preparing engineers for professional careers while maintaining the rigorous academic base necessary to prepare students for further education at the graduate level.
To prepare students for careers in industry and the public sector and provide technical background to succeed in graduate schools in the area of their technical concentration.
To prepare students for engineering positions at both the entry and managerial levels, and to provide the requisite technical background to succeed in doctoral level research and study in the area of their technical concentration.
