MassMutual Financial Group, the University of Hartford, and Western New England College (WENC) presented the fifth annual MassMutual Academic Achiever Conference at the WENC campus in Springfield, Mass., on Jan. 10. Approximately 500 high school students from Hartford and Springfield took part in the program.

A number of University of Hartford faculty and staff attended the event. The University of Hartford has hosted this conference for Hartford high school students annually since 2003. The 2007 conference will be held at the university, with students from both Hartford and Springfield.

Christine Grant, an associate in the university’s Corporate and Community Relations office, said the university looks forward to hosting MassMutual Academic Achiever students from both Hartford and Springfield next year, to help them achieve their academic goals in higher education and to support the city of Hartford’s academic initiatives.

“Our goal is to encourage high school students in the community to continue their education,” Grant said. “Our partnership with MassMutual helps give these students the tools and knowledge to encourage academic achievement.”

In attendance at this year's conference were members of a committee led by Grant, including Francesca Borges Gordon, assistant director, corporations and foundations; Kareem Nulan, program coordinator, Educational Main Street; Terri Raimondi, manager of media relations; and Sebby Sorentino, director of Media Technology Services.

University of Hartford faculty and staff who presented workshops at the conference included Beth Skoglund, associate director of Admission and Student Financial Assistance; Paula Alderette, assistant dean of student services at Hillyer College; and Bette Williams, an English instructor at Hillyer College.

The “Picture Your Future” conference provided students with a full day of workshops and activities that focused on college preparation and leadership. Workshops included such topics as “Getting Into College,” “Time Management and Study Skills,” “How to Make a Good Impression,” and “Paying for College: Scholarships and Financial Aid.”

MassMutual Academic Achievers earn an invitation to the conference by maintaining a B average or better for four consecutive marking periods during grades 10 through 12.
