Abraham Mishkind Dies

Violinist Abraham J. Mishkind, a faculty member at The Hartt School for 20 years, died Jan. 14 in a Northampton, Mass., hospital, at the age of 90. He was the beloved teacher of hundreds of violin and viola students in the Hartford area.
An assistant professor of violin and viola at Hartt from 1966 to 1986, Mishkind was also a first violinist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, serving as assistant concertmaster for many years. He was a violinist with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, with which he toured throughout the United States and the world; the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; the Pittsburgh Symphony; the Heritage String Quartet (University of Kentucky); and the Aspen Festival Orchestra.
He received his B.S. from the Juilliard School of Music, and his M.A. from Columbia University.
As part of the Mishkind Duo, with his violinist wife, Elaine, he performed many concerts of the violin duo literature in Boston, Detroit, Hartford, and Springfield. The couple also gave hundreds of concerts as members of the All in the String Family quartet, where they delighted and educated young children and their families throughout Connecticut.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Amherst, Mass.; his son, Daniel and his wife, Beth Silverstein and their children, Noah and Elijah, of Leverett, Mass.; his son, Marc Mishkind, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a brother and sister, Herman and Milda Mishkind, both of Chelmsford, Mass.
