Car Sharing is Coming to Campus
A new transportation option for students, faculty and staff will arrive on campus this week.
Zipcar, a popular car-sharing service, will have two vehicles parked on campus for the University community and its neighbors to use. The Toyota Prius and Ford Focus models will be perfect for anything from quick runs to the grocery store to a road trip with friends.
Here’s how it will work:
1. Starting next week, sign up on zipcar.com/uhartford.
2. Reserve a car online or on your phone for as short as an hour or as long as four days.
3. Let yourself into the car with your unique Zipcard. (The keys are already in the car).
This year, University of Hartford members can join for $25. Rates start at $7.50/hr and $69/day. That includes gas, insurance, and 180 miles per day to go wherever you want to go.
An event celebrating the University’s partnership with Zipcar will begin at 1 p.m. on the Gengras lawn on Thursday, Oct. 3. It will include remarks from University President Walter Harrison and a demonstration of how the Zipcars operate. Representatives from Zipcar will be available to answer questions outside Gengras Student Union from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on that day. In the meantime, please visit zipcar.com/how for more information about how the service works.
The Zipcar service has many benefits. Studies have shown each Zipcar takes approximately 15 personally owned cars off the road, reducing congestion and parking demand. In addition, Zipcar members reduce their overall mileage by about 40 percent, helping to reduce emissions.
With the new Zipcar program available on campus, student organizations at the University of Hartford will now have the opportunity to participate in the “Students with Drive” grant program sponsored by Zipcar and Ford Motor Company, which provides students with free Zipcar memberships and driving credits to support student organizations on campus.
Through the Students with Drive grant program, Ford and Zipcar will provide $300,000 in grants to be awarded to student organizations at eligible Zipcar colleges and universities. The program is running now through April 2014 and will culminate with one student organization being awarded a grand prize of $5,000 in Zipcar credits, $10,000 in cash for the student organization to put toward its cause, and $10,000 in cash to be awarded to the winning school. For more information and to participate in the program, students can visit the “Students with Drive” tab on Zipcar’s University Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ZipcarU.
