Tonkin Wins International Education Award
At the annual conference of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, in Montreal on May 23, Tonkin received this year’s Cassandra Pyle Award for Leadership and Collaboration in International Education and Exchange.
In his acceptance speech, delivered to an audience of approximately 4,500 people, Tonkin spoke about the increased need for international and intercultural understanding.

Tonkin’s status on the international stage is evident in his recent schedule of lectures and presentations. In April, Tonkin lectured on “Shakespeare as Language Planner” at South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand, and on “Language Inclusion and Individual Exclusion: Patterns of Communication in Bilingual and Multilingual Polities” at the Symposium on Multilingualism and Exclusion, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa.
His paper “Language Equality in Europe: An Answer in Pursuit of a Question” was presented at the Conference on Language Diversity and Integration in the Enlarged European Union at the University of Kaunas, Lithuania, on May 12.
On May 20, Tonkin gave a paper on “The Faerie Queene and the Search for the Perfect Language” at the Conference of the International Spenser Society at the University of Toronto. And at the annual conference of NAFSA, where he received the Cassandra Pyle Award, Tonkin also gave a presentation on the question “Is Binational Study Abroad Good Enough in a Multinational World?”
