Cheerleaders, 'Howie' Bring Home Awards
Among their achievements, the cheerleaders took first place in the cheer competition and won the overall title of "Camp Champs."
The cheerleaders, Howie the Hawk, and Cheerleading Coach Susan Piechowicz attended the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) College Spirit Camp from Aug. 6-8.
Some 265 participants from 17 colleges and universities were evaluated at the camp on cheers, chants and stunting. Cheerleaders and coaches also were tested on NCAA and AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators) safety awareness and guidelines.
Throughout the final day of camp, cheerleaders competed to become “Camp Champs” and mascots demonstrated their skills through "Mascot Follies" and their personally designed skits. Howie the Hawk was named “Most Collegiate” mascot by the UCA staff. The University of Hartford cheerleaders earned six superior ribbons, placed third in the sideline competition and won first place in the cheer competition, earning them the title of “Camp Champs.” The team also was named “Most Collegiate” by the UCA staff.
UCA is the leading cheerleading organization in the country, and works closely with the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators and the NCAA to develop cheerleading safety guidelines. University of Hartford alumnus Peter Michel ’94 is UCA’s northeast district manager.
