University of Hartford students may choose to “miss a meal” today (Wednesday, Sept. 7) to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

In response to queries from students looking for ways to help hurricane survivors, the university and ARAMARK have designated today as “Miss a Meal for Hurricane Relief Day” on campus.

“If you are a residential student on a meal plan, you may go to the Commons at either lunch or dinner, tell them you want to miss a meal for hurricane relief, swipe your card, and the value of the meal will go into a special account,” Vice President for Student Affairs Lee Peters said Tuesday in an email to students. “At the end of the day, we will take the proceeds in the account and donate them to the American Red Cross on behalf of the students of the University of Hartford.”

If you are not a residential student, but have Hawk Cash loaded on your card and want to donate to the cause, you may do so by visiting the Hawk Card website at www.hawkcard.com. A link with information on hurricane relief donations will be added to the Hawk Card website later today.

Those who choose to participate in the "Miss a Meal" effort will not only be raising badly needed funding for relief efforts, but they will be showing solidarity with those in Louisiana and Mississippi who have missed many meals during the last ten days.

Students who choose to “miss a meal” will not be able to eat at the Commons or elsewhere using a meal until after that meal period ends. However, students who need to eat something can still use dining dollars, cash, Hawk Cash, or credit cards to get a bite to eat anywhere on campus.

“Thank you in advance to those who choose to participate in this program, and thanks to all of our students who are helping in other ways, through campus and off-campus programs,” Peters said. “You are a great student body.”
