Two publications initiated by the Hartford Art School (HAS) received recognition in the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) Annual Design Competition. The Hartford Art School catalogue received a Silver award (the highest award in its category and the only silver in the category), and the exhibition catalogue for The Charged Image received an excellence award.

The HAS catalogue was designed by Associate Professor Mark Snyder and HAS alums Kevin Sepe ‘99 and Todd Timney ’97. They were assisted by student intern Tim Cohan ‘05. HAS staff members Christine Dalenta and Robert Calafiore provided photography that was included in the publication. Editorial assistance was provided by HAS staff including Mikki Dembar, Tom Bradley, Power Boothe, Monica Mills, Nancy Rogers, and Cheryl MacMath. The catalogue features the work of more than 100 Hartford Art School students.

The Charged Image catalogue was designed by Snyder, who was assisted by student intern Cohan. The exhibition was organized by Zina Davis, director of the Joseloff Gallery, who also wrote an essay for the publication. Editorial assistance was provided by Davis and Robyn Kelsey.

The UCDA Design Competition recognizes the best of the exceptional design work done to promote higher education. This year’s UCDA competition received more than 1,300 entries, with the judges awarding 204 awards of excellence, 13 silver awards, and eight gold awards. The judging criteria for print entries included excellence in concept, design, illustration, typography, and printing, as well as effectiveness, quality, and creativity in solving the problems inherent in institutional design.
