Benefits Extended to Same-Sex Partners
Posted 9/27/2005
The following is a letter from President Walter Harrison that will be sent to faculty and staff later this week:
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Regents has approved the recommendation of the Benefits Task Force (BTF) to extend the full range of university-sponsored benefits to same-sex partners of university employees effective October 1, 2005.
In July 2000, the University extended medical coverage to same-sex domestic partners of our employees. At that time, cost estimates prohibited the University from looking beyond medical benefits. During the past year, the BTF reconvened its Domestic Partner Subcommittee to reevaluate the feasibility of extending our complete benefits package to same-sex partners.
It was the unanimous recommendation of the Benefits Task Force that the University of Hartford recognize same-sex partners (and their dependent children) in all areas that we recognize spouses (and their dependent children) with regard to University sponsored benefit programs. These benefits include tuition remission, tuition exchange, the employee assistance program (EAP), dental insurance, spousal and dependent child life insurance, personal accident insurance, as well as discounted Sports Center memberships. In addition, the university’s family and medical leave policy will be expanded to include employees caring for a same-sex partner, and/or their partner’s parents and/or dependent children.
To enroll a same-sex partner in university-sponsored benefit programs, please contact the Office of Human Resources Development (HRD) at extension 4666.
The University is committed to providing a comprehensive benefits package to our community. I am grateful to the Benefits Task Force for its advice and guidance in this effort and to Professor Jane Horvath, my special assistant for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues, who provided valuable input and assistance on this matter.
Sincerely,
Walter Harrison
President
