Weekend Power Outages
Posted 10/10/2005
The following is a message to the university community from Beverly Maksin, vice president for finance and administration.
Stormy weather and continuing problems with one of Connecticut Light & Power's (CL&P) underground cables caused two separate power outages in the university's residence halls over the weekend.
A power outage on Friday afternoon on the residential side of campus prompted the overnight closure of Regents Park and the Village Apartments Quad 5. CL&P informed the university that the source of the outage was an underground cable that malfunctioned. Power to the two residence halls was turned off at 10 p.m. and restored at 4 a.m. Saturday so students could return to their residences. The Sports Center remained open Friday night for those students affected by the closures.
Due to the weekend's heavy rains, a ground-level transformer behind the Sports Center went out on Sunday morning at around 7 a.m., knocking out power to residential complexes A, D, E & F, as well as Lincoln Theater. Power was restored to the complexes and Lincoln Theater by noon.
CL&P will be back on campus to work on resolving these problems. It is likely that scheduled shutdowns will be required to make necessary repairs. The university will be working with CL&P to minimize disruptions, and we will communicate this schedule to the campus community as soon as possible.
