'What is Beauty?' Calendar to be Unveiled Friday
The campus group Women for Change will unveil its new "What is Beauty?" calendar on Friday, Feb. 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in GSU Room 331. The entire campus community is invited.
The calendar challenges the notion that beauty is solely related to what is seen. Women students, staff, and faculty posed for the calendar and shared their stories about how they define beauty.
"You will not find the narrow images of beauty that are typically seen in calendars, but rather diverse images and stories that are as varied as women are," says Associate Professor of Psychology Mala Matacin, faculty sponsor of Women for Change. "No women defined beauty in exactly the same way. I was excited about this project, but the truth is I have been deeply touched by some of the submissions and the conversations I have had with women – even those I have known for years."
The calendar is on sale for $10 to raise money for Women for Change and to purchase materials for a joint project with the Women and Gender Resource Center (Lamb Umbrellas for Peace).
Women for Change is a campus-based organization whose aim is to provide a space for education, open dialogue, and support among people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexual orientations surrounding body image issues, including but not limited to feminism and sexuality. The organization's goal is to promote bonds between women in society.
