The Department of Nursing in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions has been granted full accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for both its baccalaureate and master's degree programs.

Accredited for years by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), the department chose to change accrediting bodies this past year. It is a sign of the nursing programs’ strength that CCNE granted full accreditation for five years, the maximum allowed for any program being accredited by the organization for the first time.

Prior to the mid-1990's, NLNAC was the sole accrediting body for nursing education programs in the United States. After that time, CCNE received official recognition by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accrediting agency.

According to the CCNE Directory, "CCNE is an autonomous arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the national voice for nursing education in four-year colleges and universities. CCNE contributes to the improvement of the public's health by ensuring the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing that are located in higher education institutions in the United States and its territories."

In light of that role, the Department of Nursing faculty determined that CCNE is the appropriate accrediting body for its baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing.

The University of Hartford’s Department of Nursing has been serving the needs of registered nurses since 1976. Its RN to BSN degree program and its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs in Education, Management and Community/Public Health advance the professional development of registered nurses and are specifically designed to meet the needs of the adult learner. Intensive study with experienced professionals, combined with hands-on service learning with Greater Hartford’s vulnerable populations through Project Horizon, have placed the Department of Nursing in sync with the mission of the University of Hartford by combining scholarship, practical experience and community partnership.
