$25,000 Grant for Upper Albany Main Street
Posted 11/21/2005
On Oct. 19, the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, and Institutional Partnerships and Sponsored Research held a reception to recognize faculty and staff who received external funding during fiscal year 2005. Unfortunately, a $25,000 grant from St. Paul Travelers Connecticut Foundation, which was awarded to Margery Steinberg and Marilyn Risi for Upper Albany Main Street, was omitted from the list of awards being recognized.
The grant will be applied toward revitalization of the Upper Albany commercial corridor through the Main Street four-point approach, which includes organization, promotion, design, and economic restructuring. The Main Street approach to revitalization is a proven method for stimulating and sustaining community development and has been the most successful revitalization effort in north Hartford since Upper Albany Main Street’s designation in May 2000.
The four-point approach is carried out by four major committees reflecting the elements of the method, as well as a Crime Prevention Committee unique to Upper Albany Main Street. The Crime Prevention Committee seeks to make the commercial corridor a safe, clean environment in which to work and shop through a partnership with the Hartford Police Department and Hartford Proud and Beautiful.
Upper Albany Main Street works with key community stakeholders, including public and private institutions, local merchants and residents, community-based organizations, the City of Hartford, and private corporations to improve the commercial vitality of the Upper Albany district.
