William C. Harris, the founding director general of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), will speak in Wilde Auditorium on Tuesday, March 28, at 4:30 p.m., as part of the University's Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

SFI was established by the Irish government to promote excellence in science and engineering. Its aim is to attract global research and development activity through funded collaborations with Irish universities. Harris has attracted several of the world's top research and development labs to establish branches in Ireland, among them Bell Labs and Hewlett-Packard.

In his Rogow lecture, Harris will discuss how SFI can be a model for partnerships between businesses, government, and colleges and universities in Connecticut.

Harris went to Ireland after a long career with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) (1978-96) that included leading the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate. During his tenure at the NSF, he launched more than 25 science and technology centers across the United States that support interdisciplinary, multi-university research.

Previously, Harris was vice president of research at the University of South Carolina and the founding director of Columbia University's Biosphere II Center in Arizona. He earned his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary and his doctorate from the University of South Carolina.

Harris has authored more than 58 research papers and review articles in chemistry, and in 1997 he was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He recently became a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

For tickets, call the University box office at 860.768.4228 or 800.274.8587.
