Students, faculty, and staff stood in line outside the Sports Center for several hours Friday afternoon to get tickets for President Barack Obama’s historic visit to the University of Hartford on Monday.

President Obama will give a speech in the Chase Family Arena at the Sports Center, where he is expected to continue asking the American people to join him in calling on Congress to pass measures to reduce gun violence.

The 1,500 tickets that the White House had set aside for students, faculty, and staff were given out in just 23 minutes once ticket distribution began at 5 p.m. Friday.

Members of the campus community came to the Sports Center Friday afternoon with camping chairs, snacks and drinks, Frisbees, laptop computers, and other supplies to help pass the time while they waited in line for tickets.

The line stretched from the front of the Sports Center to Al-Marzook Field and beyond, as people waited patiently in the bright spring sunshine.

Students said that they were excited and proud to have the president coming to campus, and they wanted to take advantage of this historic occasion.

"It's not often that you get a president coming to your school to speak to you, so it's definitely an honor," said first-year student Pat Byrne, who was one of the first in line for tickets.
