Assistant Professor Claudia Oakes from ENHP's Department of Health Sciences and Nursing was recently honored by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) with a Special Interest Section Writer's Award.  It was presented at AOTA's 94th Annual Conference held in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, April 5.

Oakes's article, Whose Safety Is it Anyway? Evaluating Outcomes of Home Modifications, was published in the AOTA Home and Community Health Special Interest Section Quarterly 20 (2), 1-3. In it she explores how older clients may respond to an occupational therapist's objective evaluation of their home's safety, and why there is often a gulf between the practitioner's and the client's view of safety in their own home.  As such, she offers new insights into the client's perspective about safety that will eventually lead to more satisfaction with the therapeutic process and better outcomes.
