The following email was sent to faculty and staff on Friday, July 25.
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I write to let you know that Hilary Respass, who has served as director of The Hartt School's Community Division since 2010, will be leaving the University community to become executive director of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. In her new job at BUTI, which she will begin on Aug. 18, Hilary will lead the preeminent summer training program for aspiring high school-age musicians
During her time leading Hartt's Community Division, Hilary successfully achieved a financial turnaround, increasing overall net revenue by five percent. She and her team of HCD faculty and staff increased enrollment, strengthened programs, and improved student access. Under Hilary's leadership, the orchestra, wind ensemble, and dance programs were expanded, a new Latin jazz program was launched, and a new year-end student evaluation program (Achievement Days) was introduced.
In addition, Hilary brokered new partnership programs and collaborative projects with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Hartford Public Schools, Hartford Performs, and The Bushnell Performing Arts Center. She also made significant contributions to the development and creation of The Hartt School strategic planning document Vision 2018, and served as co-chair of Solution Team No. 2 as part of the University's strategic planning process.
Hilary has been a tireless and highly effective leader. I particularly will miss Hilary's contributions to discussions of policy and procedure—where she often was able to size up an issue and offer thoughtful and straightforward solutions.
Soon I will communicate plans for an interim director of The Hartt School Community Division and a process for a national search to find a new director.
Please join me in wishing Hilary the very best in her new position.
