Director of Athletics Anton Goff wasted no time making the University community’s newest members feel right at home during the annual Convocation on Saturday, Aug. 30, in Lincoln Theater.

“Class of 2018! Time to turn it up,” Goff told the hundreds of jubilant freshmen. “Make some noise!”

Goff was the featured speaker at this year’s Convocation. He urged the students to focus on three things during their time at the University: “what’s inside sets us apart,” the theme of this year’s freshmen t-shirts; the importance of graduating and giving back to their school; and “Hawk Nation Domination,” the popular catchphrase Goff introduced over the summer that represents excellence in all things.

University President Harrison also greeted the new class.

“Today you come together for the first time as a class and become part of the University of Hartford community,” said Harrison. “We welcome you to this community of learners and we commit ourselves as a University to challenging you intellectually and maintaining a supportive environment so you may succeed here as students and prepare yourself for a successful life.”

After the Convocation, the approximately 1,500 members of the Class of 2018 processed across the bridge to the academic side of campus, where they gathered in the shape of an “H” and posed for a photo on the Gengras Lawn. They were then treated to a barbecue where they had the chance to meet their classmates.

The University’s Class of 2018 comes from more than 33 states and the District of Columbia, as well as 25 foreign countries. Almost 45 percent (approximately 675 students) of the newcomers to the University of Hartford are from Connecticut. Other states well represented among the Class of 2018 are New York (about 320 students), Massachusetts (about 180 students), and New Jersey (about 120 students). International students are coming to the University of Hartford from as near as Canada and Mexico and as far away as China, Russia, and Ethiopia.

The Class of 2018 is evenly split between male and female students; 50.4 percent male and 49.6 percent female. The most popular majors among the incoming class are psychology, biology, physical therapy, business, and engineering, although students’ fields of study are widely spaced among the 83 majors offered by the University.

Returning students moved back to campus on Monday, Sept. 1.

Classes will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
