ENHP Faculty and Doctoral Students Present at NERA
The mission of the Northeastern Educational Research Association (NERA) is to encourage and promote educational research. One of the ways in which it accomplishes its mission is by sponsoring an annual conference at which formal presentations, feedback, and professional interchange about research occurs. The 43rd Annual Meeting of NERA took place Oct. 17-19 in Rocky Hill, Conn. The 2012 conference theme was Multidisciplinary Approach to Educational Research.
In the area of research in special education, Assistant Professor Megan Mackey presented a paper entitled “Middle School Inclusion: Case Studies of Three General Education Teachers.” Mackey and Assistant Professor Sheetal Sood presented a paper entitled, “Teaching Number Sense: Role of Cognitive and Explicit Instruction" for the session on Issues in Mathematics Education.
In the symposium on special education and rehabilitation research, Assistant Professor Diana LaRocco and doctoral student Danielle Wilken co-presented “Universal Design for Learning: University Faculty Concerns and Level of Use.”
Focusing on issues in science education, doctoral student Sarah Ford Faulkner presented a paper entitled “Exploring Middle-Level Science Curriculum Structure and Student Achievement.”
Addressing issues of diversity in secondary education, three doctoral students presented individual papers. Jennifer Hernandez presented a paper entitled “Employing Elder Mothers’ Wisdom; Developing a Curriculum of Social Supports for College Bound Teen Mothers.” Dawn L. Bunting presented “Developing Community College Social Supports for Non-traditional Nursing Students with Children.” Jessica Fitzgerald presented “Secondary School Teachers’ Perceptions of Job-Embedded Professional Development and their Understandings of Adult Learning.”
Under the topic of strategies for making education accessible to special populations, Associate Professor Karen I. Case presented a paper entitled “Dogged Maternal Pedagogies, Canines in the Households of Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity.”
In the area of educational technology, doctoral student Sahaya Josephine presented a paper entitled “International Students Education and Learning Management System: Analysis Using Technology Acceptance Model.” Under the heading – Digging Deeper into the Student Experience, Josephine presented a paper entitled “Study Abroad Program Destination Preferences of Hospitality Students: An Analysis Using Typologies.” A third presentation, “Global Competence as an Outcome of Internationalization: College Students’ Perspective” was offered as part of educational research around the globe. And representing issues related to post-secondary education, Josephine also presented a paper entitled “International Student Perception of Leadership Studies in MBAs.”
In addition to formal presentations, Sahaya Josephine and Jessica Fitgerald also served as 2012 conference proposal reviewers. Assistant Professor Diana J. LaRocco was both Chair and Discussant for Research in Post-Secondary Education and Chair for Research Focused on Teacher Preparation.
