Soccer Season Off to a Great Start

The colder temperatures have not cooled off the University of Hartford's soccer programs, as both the men and women are enjoying success during the season's opening weeks.
Men Remain Undefeated
The men's soccer team is unbeaten through its first six matches for just the second time in the program's Division I history. The only other time the Hawks have posted an unbeaten record through their first six games was in 1984, when the squad got off to a 5-0-1 start.
The Hawks' record for the 2013 season is now 4-0-2, following a thrilling, double overtime victory against Marist on Tuesday evening (Sept. 17).
Hartford is currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Northeast Men's Poll, as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition, freshman goalkeeper David MacKinnon has been named America East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. MacKinnon went 200 minutes without conceding a goal last week, earning his second and third career shutouts. Following Tuesday's win over Marist, MacKinnon has now gone 459 minutes without allowing a goal. MacKinnon anchors a back line that also features sophomores Jhamie Hyde and Blake Jones as well as juniors Damion Lowe and Rohan Roye. Collectively, the unit has allowed just one goal all season and ranks among the nation's best.
One of two undefeated teams remaining in the America East, the Hartford men's soccer team will look to continue its hot streak at home on Friday night (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m. when it takes on Harvard at Al-Marzook Field (behind the Sports Center). Read about giveaways for students at Friday's game.
Women On A Roll
The Hartford women's team also boasts Rookie of the Week honors, as freshman goalkeeper Jessica Jurg was named America East co-Rookie of the Week on Monday.
In addition to her conference award, Jurg was one of three Hawks to earn All-Tournament distinction at the Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational last weekend. The Hawks finished the Fairfield tournament with a 1-0-1 record with a 110-minute stalemate against Holy Cross and a 1-0 victory over American. Also named to the All-Tournament team were Hartford's Amanda Hamilton and Chanel Johnson.
The Hawks now have a 3-2-3 record for the season, after falling to the Yale University Bulldogs on Wednesday night (Sept. 18).
Next up for the Hartford women is a home game against Central Connecticut State University on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field (behind the Sports Center). Read about giveaways for students at Sunday's game.
