The gospel choir, now in its second decade of existence, is a place where students and community members can sing together in an environment of mutual respect and support. The group is made up of 40 to 50 students who meet weekly for Bible studies and singing rehearsals.
The choir is constantly booking gigs at churches around the area, along with two large feature concerts a year (one in the fall and one in the spring), and often have big-name gospel stars that join along.
"The choir is a safe haven where our students can breathe a little bit and have some fun. You know how everything just hits you at once at college. We try to have a good impact on each other," said Shantal Russell, a senior voice major at The Hartt School and president and director of the gospel choir.
