Teaching Focus

Kim Groot teaches and advises nurses in the RN to BSN Nursing Program. Her personal philosophy of teaching is strongly linked to her philosophy of nursing. Both are derived from examining the dynamics of the student-teacher and nurse-patient relationships, the interactions, and the effects that take place within the context of those dynamics. The relationships are similar.  As a teacher she is meeting the spectrum of a student’s educational and learning needs as a nurse would meet a patient’s diverse needs.

Groot creates flexible learning environments by planning goal-oriented experiences to create optimal learning opportunities in clinical settings such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens, senior centers, and schools. Her primary focus is to have students be self-directed, goal-oriented, and actively involved in their experiential learning process.

Professional Interests

Groot conducts seminars on topics as varied as family and community emergency preparedness, cultural humility in community health nursing, and mental health and substance abuse treatment for healthcare professionals. In 2012 she contributed a chapter on women’s and children’s drug abuse to the book Sex Trafficking: A Clinical Guide for Nurses.
