Teaching Focus

Assistant Professor Mary Botticelli Christensen is the coordinator of the Secondary English Education Program for those students seeking certification as secondary English teachers. Her courses include teaching methods in writing and literature and integrate service learning.  She has been the director of Educational Main Street (EMS) for more than half of its 23 year history on campus. EMS has adopted a model of research, service, and outreach to integrate its mission to serve the educational needs of the Greater Hartford community and the academic needs of our University students. Christensen, a strong proponent of service-learning,  has created many opportunities for University students to work with school-age children to complement classroom learning.

Professional Interests

Christensen is interested in neuroscience and its application to teaching and learning. She is currently investigating new models for tutoring students. She has also presented at a variety of conferences on developing and sustaining partnerships between universities and public schools.
