Assistant Professor David Knapp, BSME, MEd, CPO teaches Biomechanics, Lower Limb Orthotics, Upper Limb Prosthetics, Scientific Inquiry, and is a lab instructor for Kinesiology.
Knapp is currently investigating the effects of ankle element flexibility on gait. Various designs are used in both prosthetics and orthotics to simulate ankle function via a flexible element. While the function of the anatomic ankle joint is well documented, little is known about the degree of flexibility that is needed from an assistive device for a given patient scenario. This research will describe the function of the ankle, examine the effects of several of the most common AFO’s and prosthetic feet, and make recommendations for clinical guidelines regarding ankle element design as related to patient presentation.
