Joan Pedro became associate dean in 2007. She is an associate professor in ENHP's Department of Education. In addition to her college-wide administrative role, she serves as the interim chair of the department. Pedro continues to coordinate the college's teacher education programs.
Pedro has more than 40 years experience as an educator at multiple levels both in her native country of Trinidad and Tobago and in the United States. She earned a PhD in Education from Virginia Tech in 2001 and a master's in Special Education from the University of Miami in 1990. Pedro has been involved with adult education and community outreach for more than 20 years. For the University of Sheffield, UK, she held the administrative position of program director of a distance-learning program for six years. She has conducted numerous workshops and presentations in Trinidad and Tobago commissioned by the Ministry of Education, University of Manitoba, CIDA, and UNESCO. She is an assessment specialist and consultant in elementary and special education and has served on various boards and education committees. Her scholarly interests focus on teacher education and reflective practice. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on contemporary issues in literacy and multicultural education. Pedro is deeply committed to the preparation of reflective practitioners and the research of best practices in education.
