Hartford Public Schools

University students enjoy real-world learning in Hartford public schools as early as first semester freshman year.

June 15, 2011 President Walter Harrison and then Hartford Superintendent designate, Christina Kishimoto, signed an affiliation agreement formalizing existing relationships and providing structure for future collaboration. The affiliation grew out of many long-standing and important partnerships between University faculty and individual Hartford schools, reaching back to the founding of the University.

What is unique about this particular affiliation is its system-wide approach, encompassing all the Hartford Public Schools and multiple University colleges: Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP), Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA), Arts and Sciences (A & S), Hillyer College, the Hartt School, and possibly others.

New and innovative research initiatives are coordinated and facilitated through the University’s Institute for Translational Research (ITR) that is housed in ENHP. Chartered in 2010, the ITR promotes academic excellence through relevant, community-engaging research and scholarship.

At the district level, the University was invited to place two members on the committee for Strategic Operating Plan #3, College and Career Readiness. Joan Pedro, ENHP Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Suzi D’Annolfo, ENHP Coordinator of School Partnerships, currently serve on the committee.

In a district-wide effort focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the Hartford Public Schools joined the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions and other community partners to sponsor the annual Connecticut STEM Conference at the Connecticut Science Center. Hundreds of administrators, teachers, college faculty, and community stakeholders have taken part in the day-long program of lectures and workshops on STEM education.

Billings-Forge Neighborhood After School Program

Billings-Forge Neighborhood After School Program is a collaboration with faculty from the Department of Education, ENHP, has initiated research in best practices and its effect on student behaviors. Preliminary findings and the transfer of those best practices to the school setting are in progress.

Montessori Magnet School at Annie Fisher

In partnership with the Association and Montessori Internationale Montessori Training Center of New England ENHP the Montessori Magnet School at Annie Fisher is involved in an elementary education masters program with a Montessori concentration.

University High School of Science and Engineering (UHSSE)

The University High School is located on the University campus. As a (9–12) Early College Model, the school is fully engaged with all aspects of the University of Hartford’s seven colleges through dual enrollment, an annual faculty Community of Practice model, and open campus exchanges, including use of the university library, campus transportation, University secondary education, Health Sciences and Engineering majors full access to the University High School.
