Assistant Professor Janet Gangaway Wins National Leadership Award from American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)

Janet GangawayThe Judy Cirullo Award for Leadership is presented annually to an APTA aquatic physical therapy section member who consistently promotes aquatic physical therapy through service and/or clinical practice.  The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences' Janet Gangaway is the 2013 recipient. Gangaway is a regional representative to the Membership Committee, Aquatic Physical Therapy Section, and has presented numerous times for the Section.

The nominating letter submitted by “Dee” Virginia I. Ellis, PTA, fully supports recognition of Gangaway:

Janet is a long standing APTA Aquatic Section member that demonstrates dedication to this aspect of our profession by her involvement with PT education, research on many subjects related to Aquatic Physical Therapy and her willingness to mentor students with research. Janet also continues to treat patients at University Physical Therapy, LLC.

Ms. Gangaway  is an Aquatic Section Representative and has presented research platforms for the Aquatic Section. Janet has also been involved with the Connecticut Physical Therapy Association as Chair of the Publications Committee. She also actively networks with the Aquatic Rehabilitation Network, Aquatic Therapy and Rehabilitation Institute and the Aquatic Exercise Association: all organizations that promote health and wellness using aquatic techniques. She is active with creation of curricula for students and consistently has been a driving force for quality didactic and clinical education for PT students.

The extensive amount of research and publication that this individual has contributed to increase our knowledge base is evidence of her quiet power.  Janet is a constant force that the Aquatic Section should value and applaud. Her approach to evidence based information for education and understanding of translation to practice is an invaluable combination that we need now more than ever.

The award is named for Judy Cirullo, PT, Cert MDT, CMP owner of Oregon Spine and Physical Therapy. She is founder and past president of the Aquatic Section of APTA.
