Rachel Lutzker '99 & Da'Rel Eastling '99 We are very excited to be the 2009-10 chairs of the University of Hartford's Anchor Fund (formerly the Annual Fund).

"The knowledge and internship experiences I gained at the University have made a big difference in my life; I want to help the University make an even bigger difference in the lives of students and alumni." Rachel Lutzker '99

"As a Vice President at Prudential I understand the value of wise investments, investing in education is always a good decision and I want to help more people make the decision to give to the Anchor Fund." Da'Rel Eastling '99

But there is another reason why we know the Anchor Fund is important. In the higher education community, a key measure of the quality of a university is the number of gifts its alumni make to its Anchor Fund. For example, U.S. News and World Report considers alumni giving rates as an indicator of the satisfaction alumni feel towards the education they received. A measure of quality.

So if you are not able at present to make a large gift, make a small one! Simply by participating, you help to enhance the reputation of this wonderful University.

David B. Smith '67 I spent one evening a week working towards an associate's degree from the business school. Like many of my classmates, I had a full-time job and was attending the University on benefits provided by the GI Bill. My classes were held in a former elementary school on Hudson Street in downtown Hartford but I did get to graduate at the brand new Bloomfield Avenue campus.

Obtaining a college degree with courses such as accounting, management, and public speaking broadened my professional opportunities and enabled me to achieve greater success.

I wasn't a "traditional" student but I am a traditional alumnus. I know that each year my support is important and I am happy to provide it. I am thankful for my education and give back every year knowing that my support is providing the opportunity of a quality education for the next generation of students.

I will always support the Anchor Fund because it is a fund that reaches every student in every school. From Hillyer to Hartt, from Barney to A&S, every student is given the opportunity to benefit from the Anchor Fund.

Paul '85 and Joan A'81 '83 Sittard We thoroughly enjoyed our time as students at the University of Hartford. We made many good friends, had memorable experiences, and, of course, received an outstanding education. All of this combined gave us tools and skills that have helped us be successful in our lives and careers.

Today's University is a very special place. Faculty and staff challenge students to grow and achieve both academically and personally. There is excitement everywhere you look — in the engineering labs, in the rehearsal studios, in the art spaces, and in the teaching classrooms. Students have so much fun socializing on Alumni Plaza and cheering for our sports teams.

The Anchor Fund is vital to the University's continued ability to provide this learning environment that allows students to transform themselves intellectually, personally, and socially. A strong Anchor Fund increases the value of a University of Hartford degree. We are asking all of you — alumni, friends, parents, faculty, and staff — to contribute to the Anchor Fund. Help the University of Hartford continue to be an excellent place to grow, explore, learn, and achieve.

India Harris A'06 '08 I learned a lot working as a caller at the University's Telefund. The greatest lesson I learned was to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. When calling, I spoke with people that were facing financial hardships, families to support, unemployment, and other barriers hindering them from donating. It was my goal to focus on life's positive aspects instead. Accentuating the positive helped donors realize the blessings of life, and they were more likely to give.

I love to see the University flourish and succeed financially and academically. For four years, the University of Hartford was my home. I experienced joy, pain, hurt, and, best of all, love. Life there taught me to be happy with myself and happy for others. The lessons I learned at this institution will never be forgotten, and this is why, the University of Hartford is dear to me.

One of my favorite moments was graduation. I was happy to see the end results of others that started the college journey with me. The University of Hartford gave us four memorable years. Now that we have graduated and moved on with our separate lives, it is important not to forget the place that helped mold us into adults. Remember to give others the opportunity to experience college's ups and downs; it is those experiences that will shape them. The University is relying on us to help educate others and the best method is to make a gift every year.

Joe Voelker
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
I could go on and on about what a great choice I made when I decided to devote my career to higher education, and what a great life and privilege it is to work at a university, and to play a role in developing the minds of the next generation of professionals and leaders. As a dean, I often labor away at curriculum and budgets, accreditations, assessments, and evaluations; and yet I share with our teaching faculty the sense that I am far better described as a "citizen" of the University of Hartford than as an employee. And it is the duty of a good citizen to give something back. That, in a nutshell, is why I contribute to the Anchor Fund.
