I graduated from San José State University with a major in fine arts painting. I spent a few years in the gallery market, but finding galleries commercial and unsatisfying, moved into the illustration market. I worked for five years in Lockheed's Space Systems Division as an illustrator doing technical illustration and conceptual paintings of spacecraft and hardware. Some of the programs I worked on were Space Shuttle, Space Telescope, Space Station, and early Mars landing proposals. I spent another seven years as an art director for Lockheed's New Business Acquisition, doing conceptual renderings for new products and designing presentation artwork for SSD's Acquisition Management. After leaving the space industry, I spent 20 years freelancing in the science fiction game and book cover market, along with other various markets.
I have been teaching full-time for the past 26 years in the Hartford Art School's undergraduate illustration program. The classes taught are: Figure Illustration, Figure Painting, Computer Illustration, Watercolor Techniques, Acrylic Techniques, Oil Techniques, Editorial Illustration, Advertising Illustration, Archaeological Illustration, and Portfolio Preparation. I am also a thesis advisor for the Hartford Art School Low-Residency MFA in Illustration Program.
I have been taking a break from commissioned work and doing outdoor painting as a way of rejuvenating my subject matter, color, and compositional ideas.
