Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1974, Chikara Umihara studied literature at Waseda University in Tokyo, graduating in 1999. He had trained and competed in karate, and continued his practice over 20 years. In 2006, he came to New York City, to pursue his interest in photography. In 2013, he graduated from the Low-Residency MFA in Photography at the University of Hartford. He was awarded a teaching fellowship from Hartford Art School in 2015.
